Then, the camera slowly pans to Mamie’s face and gets closer and closer. During the first scene, Mamie and Bo, Emmit Till, are singing in the car together, smiling ear to ear. Mamie, played by Danielle Deadwayer, was probably some of the best acting I’ve seen all year. This movie explores the depths of racism in the 50s and the protective motherly instinct that Mamie experiences to get justice for her son. This is based on a true story about a single mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, chasing justice for her fourteen-year-old son Emmit Till, referred to as “Bo,” who was brutally murdered in 19955 while visiting his cousins in Mississippi. Tapie’s widow, Dominique, has told French journalists that she deplores the show and told RTL: “The person who made this series came to see Bernard and he told him ‘No, if someone is going to tell my story, it will be my son Laurent.’ And there you have it… No comment.” So, while the series is based on real people, those real people feel as though the wrong story is being told.The Till movie, directed by Chinonye Chukwu just released on October 14, 2022.

While the show is based on real people and real events that happened, the creators Tristan Séguéla and Olivier Demangel have made sure audiences are aware this is fictional. However, stories surrounding his private life have been fictionalized for dramatic purposes.

The official synopsis for the series says that the series “traces the romantic destiny of an extraordinary character, Bernard Tapie, one of the most iconic and controversial French public figures.” The show does state it is a fictional version of Tapie’s life, but no names have been changed to protect their identities.
